Beard Papa at Chatswood

So ShibaInu & I finally made the trip to Chatswood Westfield for Beard Papa on Friday, accompanied by a mutual friend, J.

Beard Papa box

Beard Papa makes the best cream puffs in the world. They have over 200 stores in Japan, and have stores in the US, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Korea and Hong Kong.

The puffs are fresh, soft inside, crisp outside, and the custard is absolute heaven. The custard comes in several flavours, depending on where you buy them from.

The pastry shells are first baked and cooled, and filled with custard only when you order them so they remain fresh. A sprinkle of powdered sugar/green tea/cocoa (for vanilla/green tea/chocolate respectively) and they are placed individual sleeves before being packed into boxes.

The Sydney version has 3 flavours, Vanilla, Chocolate and Green Tea. We didn’t get the chocolate ones because prior experience told us that the vanilla was still the best. However, J and I did try the green tea ones.

The puffs were as good as I remember them~~~ While ShibaInu and I have eaten them in Singapore, it was J’s first time and she said she really enjoyed it.

Matcha

Tips when eating Beard Papa puffs:

Start from the hole where the custard was introduced into the puff. This way, the custard will only end up in your mouth and not anywhere else.

No matter how tempting, do not suck the custard when it is dripping out. Doing so will usually result in choking on the powdered sugar/green tea/cocoa. That is not a pleasant experience. Using your tongue is a more effective way.

Verdict: 9 out of 10 Damns
Because isms doesn’t give 10s.

Cross Bar at Swissotel

Isms, 2 other friends and I headed to Crossroads Bar at Swissotel on Saturday. Ready for a good feast, I went in to check for my reservations.

I was told they were unable to find my name for party of 4, that I personally made on Tuesday via phone.

Though they gave me a table of 4 after the mess up, since they had an spare table. They did not even apologise.

The spread was small and sad, nothing extremely exciting or to shout about. It was nothing like what GrabYourFork made out to be, nor did her photos match up to what we saw.

The Mini creme brulees weren’t sweet enough, you might as well label it steam egg. The coconut cake was pretty decent but after 1 mouth full the magic just faded. The chocolate with the tooth pick was extremely weird for me, it was liquid lemon mint… isms liked it. Everything else on the plate was just so-so.

The only highlight for me for the chocolate fountain, chocolate coating marshmallow after marshmallow… strawberry after strawberry… but this plate after plate dream would be disturbed by a waitress… it happened when I was doodling with the chocolate talking to Isms and waiting to head up for our next wave. The waitress came and made a remark to clear the dishes, “can I clear your plate, or would you like to continue doodling?” to me that was very rude… I would do what ever I want to do with that chocolate on my plate. What else is an artist to do while waiting. Even worst, the strawberries had ran out and they did not even bother to replenish it.

So overall it was extremely disappoint for me and isms. I went to refresh myself after the meal and left isms to settle the bill.

it was 4 dollars more then the advertised price. $29 a head…

Leaving the building, I disappointingly took a photo of the advert hanging at the Swissotel’s window.

Saturday and Sunday 2p.m – 4p.m
$25.00 per person or $32.50 per person with a glass of sparkling wine on arrival.

Verdict: 3 out of 10 damns
Most points went out of the window because of it’s lousy service.
Extremely sad experience, will never go there unless its free.
It wasn’t worth the $29 or the magically claimed “$25”
